Accreditation

CAMDEV Master Coach Accreditation

One standing, one certificate, one purpose: the Certificate of Recognition as a Master Coach tells clients that the coach in front of them has been recognised against a known, demanding standard.

The credential

A quality mark that protects reputation

CAMDEV recognises a single standing — Master Coach — evidenced by a Certificate of Recognition as a Master Coach. It is the credential on which Thornhill Associates admits coaches to the coaching panel of its Leadership Development Programme, so the bar is set where it has to be: high enough that recognition is never an embarrassment.

The title “master coach” is not legally protected — anyone may use it. The words carry weight only because of the body standing behind them. CAMDEV recognition borrows the rigour of the world’s established credentialing bodies, and adds its own safeguards of verification, currency and conduct.

Positioning note: the CAMDEV Master Coach is a private quality mark. It is not a SAQA-registered designation, is not registered on the NQF, and is positioned as complementary to SAQA-registered designations such as the COMENSA Master Coach.

“Recognition is awarded for demonstrated knowledge and skill, not for experience alone.”
  • One standing: Master Coach — no junior tiers
  • Two routes to the same certificate and the same obligations
  • Every recognition verifiable with CAMDEV on request
  • Valid for three years, maintained through CPD
Route 1 · The primary route

Recognition of established master credentials

One rule: a coach who holds a current, in-good-standing master-level credential from a CAMDEV-recognised body, verifiable on that body’s public register, is eligible for CAMDEV Master Coach recognition.

ICF

International Coaching Federation — Master Certified Coach (MCC). Verified on the ICF “Verify a Coach” directory.

EMCC

European Mentoring and Coaching Council — EIA Master Practitioner. Verified on the EMCC EIA holders register.

Association for Coaching

Master Coach and Master Executive Coach (both schemes). Verified on the AC member directory.

WABC

Worldwide Association of Business Coaches — Certified Master Business Coach (CMBC) and Chartered Business Coach (ChBC). Verified via the WABC locator and verification tool.

COMENSA

Coaches and Mentors of South Africa — COMENSA Master Coach, the SAQA-registered local benchmark. Verified on the COMENSA “Find a Coach” register.

What doesn’t qualify alone

ICF ACC and PCC, EMCC levels below Master Practitioner, AC levels below Master, WABC RCC and CBC, and the CCE Board Certified Coach — respectable credentials, but not master-level awards. They may count as evidence within a Route 2 application.

Every Route 1 claim is verified on the issuing body’s public register, with a certified copy of the certificate and confirmation of current standing.

Route 2 · By invitation only

Recognition of Prior Learning

Some of the most capable coaches built master-level competence without collecting a master credential. Route 2 exists for them — but it is deliberately not open to public application. Entry is by invitation, on the recommendation of a CAMDEV director or an existing CAMDEV Master Coach, and it carries no fee.

Assessment is internal, conducted by CAMDEV directors and CAMDEV-accredited Master Coaches against the COMENSA Behavioural Standards Framework. Whatever the pathway, every award turns on the same decisive element: an observed coaching demonstration. Experience opens the door; only demonstrated skill earns the certificate.

South Africa has a national RPL framework — the National Policy and Criteria for the Implementation of RPL (amended March 2019), made under the NQF Act. Its assessment principles are fairness, credibility, transparency and accountability, validity, reliability, authenticity, sufficiency and currency. These principles inform CAMDEV’s Route 2, even though the CAMDEV credential itself sits outside the SAQA system.

Pathway A — evidence-based

For candidates whose case rests on the depth of their practice: at least 2,500 logged coaching hours and seven years in practice, a portfolio of evidence, professional references, supervision and CPD records, a structured professional dialogue — and the observed coaching demonstration.

Pathway B — academic alternative

For candidates whose formal education evidences the underlying knowledge: a recognised Master’s degree at NQF Level 9 — or a foreign qualification evaluated by SAQA as comparable to a South African Master’s degree at NQF Level 9 — in a related field, at least ten years’ relevant experience, and the observed coaching demonstration.

A related field is a field of postgraduate study substantially concerned with human behaviour, adult learning, individual or group development, leadership, organisational behaviour, organisational development, communication, counselling, behaviour change or another discipline directly relevant to the theory and practice of professional coaching.

Governance

What keeps the recognition meaningful

Verified, always

Every Route 1 credential is checked on the issuing body’s public register. Most credential fraud fails at a simple registry check — so CAMDEV always makes it.

Current, not lifetime

Recognition is valid for three years and lapses if an underlying credential lapses. Renewal requires 72 CPD hours over the cycle, with supervision counted within CPD.

Accountable

CAMDEV adopts the Global Code of Ethics, operates a complaints route, and can revoke recognition for ethics breaches or misrepresentation. A credential that cannot be withdrawn is just a certificate.

CAMDEV maintains a private register of Master Coaches. To confirm a coach’s standing, email director@camdev.co.za.

Questions

Master Coach Accreditation FAQs

Is the CAMDEV Master Coach a SAQA-registered designation?

No. It is a private CAMDEV quality mark — not registered on the NQF, and it makes no claim to be. It is positioned as complementary to SAQA-registered designations such as the COMENSA Master Coach.

Which credentials qualify for recognition?

A current, in-good-standing master-level credential, verifiable on the issuing body’s public register: ICF MCC, EMCC EIA Master Practitioner, AC Master Coach or Master Executive Coach, WABC CMBC or ChBC, and the COMENSA Master Coach.

Can I apply through Recognition of Prior Learning?

Route 2 is not open to public application. Entry is by invitation only, on the recommendation of a CAMDEV director or an existing CAMDEV Master Coach — and every award turns on an observed coaching demonstration. There is no fee.

How do I verify that a coach holds CAMDEV recognition?

Email director@camdev.co.za with the coach’s name. The register is private; standing is confirmed on request.

How long does recognition last?

Three years, renewed on proof that any underlying credential remains current and that CPD has been maintained — 72 hours over the cycle, following the COMENSA standard.
